The Home of the Goodgutguy Blog

Hi, my name is Rich and I live in East Cheshire, England.

The goodgutguy blog started off as a site dedicated to my interest and passion in fermented food. I am not a scientist, a physician or a dietician. Just a normal guy with an interest in health and fermentation. I discovered fermentation in early 2020. Just before the start of Covid and with the arrival of lockdown, I already had my ‘lockdown hobby’.  With Covid, I really explored this discovering recipes and learning a whole host of new stuff.

However, over the last few years, I have struggled with my weight and especially during Covid times, found myself drinking more alcohol.

I didn’t have obvious issues with my health, but found that I would catch whatever illness the kids had.

However, toward the tail end of 2021, I knew I needed to turn my life around. I knew that if I didn’t, it would ultimately result in worsened health.

I completely overhauled my diet, starting to follow a low carb / keto style diet, gave up alcohol and started regularly exercising. This has all contributed towards me losing over 25kgs / 55lbs as of April 2023 and having a healthy BMI.

As part of this process, I discovered blogging. I found that by writing about my experiences, it helped keep me focussed on my new lifestyle.  And that’s how this site has developed.

Broadening my interests…

As I have changed my lifestyle, I have broadened my knowledge and interests. Having read one of Dr Jason Fung’s books, I now adopt a time restricted / intermittent fasting approach to eating. During this time I have come to the conclusion that food is medicine and imperative for your health. You can’t outrun a bad diet after all!

From learning how beneficial a number of wild plants are for the gut, I am gaining knowledge of foraging whilst I have also branched out into aromatherapy and herbalism. I am also (trying but not very successfully) to build meditation and breathwork into my daily routine. During this time, I have also become a huge fan of minimalist shoes and natural movement.

This blog started off as a reflective focus on fermentation but now takes a broader, more holistic view on things touching upon food fermentation including sauerkraut and kimchi, probiotics, gut health and clean eating, incorporating good bacteria into skin care regime as well as some of most favourite recipes that I’ve discovered since I started fermenting.

One area that I particularly enjoy writing is the section “The Gut, The Bad and The Ugly“, my section of the website where I review real life products.  I receive no sponsorship or financial incentives from the companies I review so you can be assured that they are completely unbiased giving my honest views of them.
